He went on stage, cued the music and set off, simply flying across the stage defying gravity while showing his musicality and control. It was a stunning 62 performance and he felt positive about his dancing. He had danced as he knew he could, technically secure and artistically exciting, and as he took his bow at the end, the hall exploded with cheering and flashing cameras. ’* She would write years later after seeing him perform professionally in a gala in New York City: ‘The exuberance and phenomenal technique he showed at the Prix de Lausanne competition several years ago are still there.

Carlos was thrilled and appreciative that the audience recognised his talent. Feeling so good inside himself, he finally realised that he had escaped from that poisoning fear of lack of self-worth. He had proved himself a dancer. The judges huddled, the audience chattered and finally the moment came for the results. Dancers were called one by one to the stage to receive their diplomas and awards but since it all was done in the French language, Carlos had no idea who had won what. He assumed he had not been chosen when he saw the boy whom he thought best in the competition go up to receive his award.

At first he was convinced that a wire must have suspended him, but after scouring the stage with his eyes for proof, he soon realised that it was the man’s technique that had sent him soaring. He was awestruck and decided there and then that he must do likewise. This is what he wanted to learn to do, no matter how hard it was to perform and no matter how long it took him. This, he resolved, is how my father must have imagined I would dance. He could hardly wait until class the next day. Once in the studio, not reacting to the taunts from the other boys because his baseball team sadly had lost the game, he renewed his energies into achieving.
