These intellectual orientations were motivated by the political aspirations of Greek nationalism which sought 'scientific' supports for its claims. Nationalism as a cultural system remained a potent force in the subsequent development of Greek writing on Cyprus. The focus of the French contribution on the Crusader Kingdom of Cyprus underlined the introduction of the institutions and culture of mediaeval French feudalism into the eastern Mediterranean island. An outgrowth of the national self-consciousness of 19th-century French scholarship, these projects were clearly boosted by the aspirations of the Second Empire in the Near East.

The British occupation brought measures for the protection of the island's archaeological treasures and this created the preconditions of scientific archaeology. Cypriot archaeology was essentially founded in the 1880s by the German scholar Max Ohnefalsch-Richter who, in cooperation with John L. Myres, organized the first Cyprus Museum.
