Seppänen focuses on cases with the demonstrative pronoun together with nominal address. This form of address has its special pragmatic conditions. In the ﬁrst part of her paper, Seppänen assesses evidence on this form from early syntactic descriptions of Finnish dialects collected by nineteenth-century scholars. Third person addresses involving a demonstrative pronoun were considered non-standard with various functions and shades of meaning. In accordance with their time, the researchers were not so much interested in the pragmatics of this construction, and therefore they did not provide sufﬁcient contextual information that would allow a retrospective analysis of the interactional details.
Data from letters is therefore the description of a restricted language from a specialised context.
