Some, such as 238 U and 40 K occur naturally, while others, such as 137 Cs and 60 Co are man-made, and result from industrial or military activities.

The uranium series starts with the uranium isotope 238 U, which decays to 234 Th through alpha decay. When the chain reaches 218 Po, two types of decay are possible: negative beta decay leads to the formation of 218 At, while alpha decay leads to 214 Pb. 5 indicate that beta decay is less probable than alpha decay. This kind of branched decay is also seen for the decay of 218 At, 214 Bi and 210 Bi. In the thorium series, a branched decay is seen for 212 Bi.
