And there are real afﬁnities, it seems to me, between what I produced in that subjective bind and what Clifford describes as ‘‘ethnographic surrealism’’: To state the contrast schematically, anthropological humanism begins with the different and renders it—through naming, classifying, describing, interpreting—comprehensible.
