Sometimes using different constructs, and sometimes developing different emphases, over the years the Frankfurt School has demonstrated quite consistently and convincingly how the marketing logics that guide programming production and distribution decisions standardize the story-telling conventions of mass media and, as a consequence, extend corporate capital’s influence that much further into the everyday life experience of people. Of all the Frankfurt theorists, I find Adorno’s work to be particularly interesting, since he carried out systematic empirical studies of the media, even working for a time with Lazarsfeld at the Bureau of Applied Social Research in New York.

1948) used the evidence of limited effects research to question the idea that mass society was simply an aggregation of atomized individuals lacking any sense of connectedness with others or to normative frameworks that guided participation in local communities and public life. So, for example, Merton (1946), in his classic study of a 1943 Kate Smith war-bond drive, documented the structure and content of persuasive radio messages, but, more importantly, he obtained measures of behavior and opinions as indicators of an active audience.

As a message or, more generally, as content patterns, the mass media was defined as a specific variable, distinct from other variables comprising the institutional matrix in which it operates, such as corporations, schools, families, and so on. The same was true of user responses. The social experience of media use was selectively broken down into its specific and variable component parts; notably, opinions, attitudes, and behaviors. The logic of variable analysis was quickly extended to the definition and measurement of a host of social psychological, psychological, and sociological variables that mediated, shaped, and contextualized responses and, hence, effects.
